PJ Morton’s new album, released via Morton Records/EMPIRE, takes listeners on an enchanting journey from Cape Town to Cairo. This ambitious project was conceived during a 30-day adventure across Africa by the five-time GRAMMY winner. Morton entered this venture without any pre-written songs, aiming to create a full album within a month while deeply engaging with the continent’s diverse cultures and communities.
His travels spanned Cape Town, Johannesburg, Lagos, Accra, Cairo, and back to South Africa, exploring many of these places for the first time. Morton aimed to capture the genuine emotions and experiences of his trip. Collaborating with artists such as Fireboy DML, Mádé Kuti, and the Soweto Spiritual Singers, along with producers P.Priime and The Cavemen, resulted in a vibrant, authentic sound. Songs like “Smoke & Mirrors,” recorded after Fela Kuti’s birthday celebrations, fuse the spirit of New Orleans with Lagos. Tracks like “Please Be Good” and “Simunye (We Are One)” emphasize native rhythms and shared pride. Pieces such as “Thank You” radiate gratitude, and “Who You Are,” with Mádé Kuti, delve into personal and ancestral identity. “Count On Me,” featuring Fireboy DML, conveys a message of camaraderie and unity. Following the album’s release, PJ Morton and his band will set off on an extensive Cape Town to Cairo Tour, including a headlining performance at Roots Picnic and a North American leg from summer through fall, showcasing his dynamic live performances across various notable venues.
