Get To Know: Fana Hues

With her upcoming LP set to drop in just a few days, and her birthday right around the corner, this 28-year-old soulstress is poised for an exciting period in her career. In just a month, she’ll join Lucky Daye as a special guest on the Algorithm Tour. We wanted to take this moment to introduce listeners to the incredible talent behind the music, offering a chance to get to know her soulful sound and powerful artistry before she takes the stage.

Fana Hues, a 25-year-old artist from Pasadena, CA, released her debut album Hues in 2020, marking a significant milestone in her musical journey. Growing up in a large family, Fana was surrounded by music from a young age. Influenced by legends like Nina Simone and Anita Baker, she spent years crafting demos and developing her unique sound. The album Hues is a testament to her perseverance, especially considering her battle to regain her voice after suffering from scarlet fever, tonsillitis, and strep throat simultaneously as a child.

Hues is rich with themes of love and loss, intertwining these emotions to explore the resilience needed to find love amidst adversity. The album reflects on her life experiences, touching on family, fear, self-awareness, grief, and the process of rebuilding. The eclectic production and heartfelt melodies create an immersive experience, culminating in the final track where she sings about “feeling yellow,” a symbol of warmth and community even in sorrowful moments. Hues invites listeners to deeply connect with these emotions, evoking a sense of shared experience and empathy.

Fana Hues’ sophomore album, flora + fana, is a contemplative 11-track journey that delves into themes of self-reliance and personal growth amidst the trials of heartbreak and self-discovery. Hues captures the intensity of these emotions, crafting a rich internal landscape that facilitates healing and resilience. The album is a testament to her understanding that with patience and self-care, recovery is attainable. In “pieces,” a vibrant and groovy track, Hues grapples with the realization that she is settling for less in a complicated relationship, questioning her perceptions with the line, “What do I believe in, the light in your eyes or the dark I see?”

The introspective and personal nature of flora + fana sets Hues apart in the current R&B scene. Her ability to create a musical ecosystem that mirrors her real-life needs and desires showcases her authenticity and relatability. The soulful single “breakfast,” infused with psychedelic beats, sees Hues expressing regret over ending a relationship while also recognizing it was the best choice. She later took to COLORS STUDIOS to share a beautiful live rendition of this beautiful track.

A few weeks ago, Fana Hues announced that her third album, MOTH, will be released on June 14. This upcoming album will include her April single, “Paper Tigers,” where she passionately conveys her love for her partner through a mix of psychedelic and soulful sounds. It’s a bold expression from a seasoned vocalist stepping out of her comfort zone.

The recently released single “Rental” is also featured on the album. This groovy track is accompanied by a vibrant summer-themed video showcasing Hues and her friends enjoying themselves to the fullest. The song is a playful and confident celebration of life’s fleeting pleasures and spontaneous adventures. In a press release, Hues explained, “’Rental’ is a song that explores how giving into a guilty pleasure can be a freeing necessity.” MOTH will feature 13 tracks, including a collaboration with Bam Marley. Hues sums up the album’s theme, saying, “Moths fly through darkness constantly searching for light even at the risk of harm. I’m always en route on a journey to find the reason for a feeling in its purest form, even if it hurts.”

Fana Hues has shown remarkable growth as an artist, consistently pushing her boundaries and exploring new depths in her music. With her upcoming project MOTH, we are excited to witness her continued evolution and the powerful stories she has to share. As she prepares to take the stage alongside Lucky Daye, we eagerly anticipate the mesmerizing performances and the profound, emotional connections she will create with her audience.
