Andra Day Shares Her Long Awaited Sophomore Album ‘CASSANDRA (cherith)’

Taking inspiration from her idol, Sade, Andra Day has released her sophomore album nine years after her debut project in 2015. Following a deliberate approach akin to Sade’s infrequent album releases, Day’s latest offering showcases her soulful vocals and heartfelt lyricism, embodying a commitment to timeless artistry that resonates deeply with listeners.

CASSANDRA, titled after the singer’s given name, invites listeners into her world as she explores the various phases of love. This project stands as Day’s most intimate yet, showcasing her boldness. It’s the first of her albums to carry a parental advisory label, indicating her unreserved approach. Among the 16 tracks, only four are labeled as explicit. Day’s captivating vocals glide over diverse audio landscapes embellished with live instrumentation, highlighting her limitless range as an artist.

Delving into her kaleidoscopic tapestry of emotions, Day opens with the cathartic “Maybe Next Time,” allowing herself the space to release a whirlwind of feelings stemming from a sinking relationship. “Midnight” follows, a vintage soul track that serves as a nod to Day’s earlier sound, where she sings about the aftermath of lost love. “Nervous” emerges as a sensual ode, interpolating Seals and Crofts’ 1972 hit “Summer Breeze.” The introspective “Still” finds Day leaning on her Higher Power for solace amid adversity, while the closing track, “Thank You God,” continues the journey, featuring a cameo from Day’s mother who concludes the album with a reading of “Psalm 62.” This captivating mosaic of songs, intricately orchestrated by Day, beckons listeners to embark on a journey through her verdant labyrinth of experiences, where each track intertwines to create a transcendent and enigmatic narrative.
